Honda Unveils Automatic Sports Motorcycle at TMS

Honda Automatic MotorcycleHonda surprises a lot of audience at the 39th Tokyo Motor Show 2005 with their motorcycle concept model, DN-01. This large-size motorcycle is equipped with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) and a water-cooled, 4-stroke, OHC, V-twin, 2-cylinder, 680cc engine. As stated by the company, they will continue the development of DN-01 with the goal of introducing it to the market in the near efature.

A continuously variable transmission (CVT) is a type of automatic transmission that can change the “gear ratio” (gears are not generally involved) to any arbitrary setting within the limits. The CVT is not constrained to a small number of gear ratios, such as the 4 to 6 forward ratios in typical automotive transmissions. CVT control computers often emulate the traditional abrupt gear changes, especially at low speeds, because most drivers expect the sudden jerks and will reject a perfectly smooth transmission as lacking in apparent power. Furthermore, Honda said that their version of CVT is different than any other CVTs that previously introduced by Suzuki. They describe their CVT as an hydraulic mechanical continuously variable HFT (Human Fitting Transmission) system featuring two automatic modes and a 6-speed manual mode which the rider operates through buttons on the handlebars.
