This software will provide comprehensive mobile security solutions that are designed to protect against and prevent mobile threats and vulnerabilities. However, it is currently being available only for Cingular Wireless customers. Those lucky mobile device users can download the anti-virus to their Symbian Series 60, Microsoft Windows Mobile Pocket PC or SmartPhone wireless devices. Not for free though. A one-year subscribtion from McAfee through Cingular’s MediaNet Web portal is offered for $29.99. This will include an automatic, over-the-air updates against any newly discovered mobile viruses and threats.

McAfee VirusScan Mobile will try to scan, detect, and clean your mobile data to prevent corruption due to viruses, worms, spyware, malware, and other technology abuses. Threats from e-mail, instant messaing, and Internet downloads will be protected, as well as multiple entry points such as SMS, MMS, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Up-to-date protection is delivered as soon as threats are identified through McAfee’s leading research organization, AVERT (Anti-Virus Emergency Response Team).

According to the company, they will soon introduce McAfee Firewall Mobile, which provides protection against hackers and data-stealing applications, monitoring both inbound and outbound communication for malicious behavior, in the second quarter of 2006.

This security firm will be the first company who develop an anti-virus protection software for that mobile platform. The S60 itself is an open platform for software developers and the Symbian OS 9.1 based S60 3rd edition has added even more features, flexibility and security. The software is retailed for 28.65 + VAT in the EU for a 12-month subscription.

At first, F-Secure Mobile Anti-Virus will be available for the new Nokia N-Series cell phones and Nokia E-Series devices. It will come pre-installed on Nokia N71 and N80 phones as a standard distribution package. While in Nokia E60, E61, and E70 devices, the antivirus client can be downloaded through Nokia Catalogs website.

According to Antti Vihavainen, Vice President, Mobile Security, “As mobile malware authors continue to increase their assault on the platform, Symbian and especially S60 has shown itself to be a large target because of its great popularity. While the S60 3rd edition offers greater protection than its predecessors, the ultimate security comes from the installation of a reliable automatically updated antivirus service which we at F-Secure offer“.

You can download the 30-days trial version of F-Secure Mobile Anti-Virus software from their website (link below).

Upon infection, it tries to change the operator logo to it’s own. More than 800 copies of mutant Trojan, purports to be Skype v1.4 VoIP client software, has been intercept by MessageLabs this week. Virus maker probably getting bored attacking the other instant messanging services and thus start finding a new target?

When executed the malware displays a fake ‘installation error’ box while installing itself as ‘%sysdir%\remote.exe’, altering the registry and shutting down shared access and Windows update services.

It then tries, but fails, to connect to either an IRC server named ‘jojogirl.3322.org’ (channel name #Phantom) or ’smallphantom.meibu.com’.

The phishing email will appear that it comes directly from Skype, according to Maksym Schipka, a senior antivirus researcher at MessageLabs. It will arrive in the email with the following subject line and body text:

Subject:

Hello. We’re Skype and we’ve got something we would like to share with…; Share Skype.; Skype for Windows 1.4; Skype for Windows 1.4 – Have you got the new Skype?; What is Skype?

The Trojan application which exploits a picture file vulnerability is the result of lengthy attempts to break the code of the gadget and modify its operating system. The code itself, said Eric Chien of Symantec, is not self-replicating and can only affect users who actively elect to download it onto their machine.

“It deletes four key directories and once those are deleted the device no longer works,” said Chien. “It’s a brick and as far as we know there is no way to reset the hardware.“. Furthermore, “This is not a big threat,” said Chien. “But the people who are going to get this are people trying to mod their PSP.”

The code which is appearing on forums was posted as the work of a group called PSP Team, however Chien told silicon.com they have disavowed all knowledge of the crack.

According to F-Secure weblog, some phone such as Nokia 6670 and Nokia 6600 survive from deletion of system directories quite easily, just a reboot and phone is usable. But the user data and MMC card are still lost. Unfortunately, mobile phone with newer Symbian OS version, such as Nokia 6630, will fail to reboot and display message that requests the phone to be taken to maintenance. However the phone can be recovered with special hard format key combination.

According to F-Secure, during infection, Cardtrap.A will create two Windows worms (Win32/Padobot.Z and Win32/Rays) in the memory card of the phone. Padobot.Z is copied with autorun.inf file in attempt to start automatically if the card is inserted to PC using windows. Eventhough most of current Windows version not yet support autorun from memory card, but some Windows version or third-party driver might.

The second worm, Rays, is copied with filename SYSTEM.EXE and same icon as the System folder. This is done as social engineering attempt so that user would click on Rays instead of System folder.

The goal of the trojan is most likely to cause user to infect his PC when he is trying disinfect his phone. A typical reaction of more advanced user who would encounter trojan like Cardtrap, would be to insert the phone memory card to PC to copy file manager or disinfection tool to the card. Only this time a careless user might to get his PC infected in process.

F-Secure has added detection and disinfection for this mobile phone virus into F-Secure Mobile Anti Virus software.

Apparently, F-Secure also provides a video clip about the virus whose trying to attack Bluetooth enable mobile phones from another infected phone.

Is this their ‘answer’ for the accuse of over-hyping the mobile virus threat by the other security company? Not sure. But the most important thing is, mobile virus is already exist. And one of the easiest thing to keep your mobile phone away from the virus is to turn on Bluetooth only if you need it and not accepting message (via Bluetooth) from stranger.

Bluetooth is a technical industry standard that facilitates communication between wireless devices such as mobile phones, PDAs (personal digital assistants) and handheld computers, and wireless enabled laptop or desktop computers and peripherals. A single Bluetooth-enabled wireless device is capable of making phone calls, synchronizing data with desktop computers, sending and receiving faxes, and printing documents. For example, an individual can use a Bluetooth connection to print a document from his PDA. Bluetooth devices use a microchip transceiver that operates on the 2.45GHz frequency and have a range of up to 10 meters (approximately 33 feet).
