GMail, a webmail service from Google, is one of the most popular free webmail service right now, due to its large capacity (over 2.5GB). Anyone, with a GMail account, can use GMail Notifier (also from Google) to receive notification on their desktop if a new email arrived on their GMail account. Recently, Google also released Mac OS version for GMail Notifier. Note that if you already install Google Desktop 2, there’s already a build-in GMail notifier feature, so you don’t have to manually install GMail Notifier.

If somehow you don’t like GMail Notifier (and you don’t install Google Desktop 2 as well), there’s another alternative software named XM2Rss. xm2Rss has the same purpose. It let’s a user of Gmail check their mail without having to be logged in through their web browser. Again, like GMail Notifier, xm2Rss also stays on the tray bar and periodically check GMail for a new email. If there is a new one, the user can then click on the tab that tells them how many new messages they have and it will automatically log them into their Gmail account.

What make xm2Rss different is that it’s not just a notifier program, it’s also a RSS feed that is freely available to any user who wishes to use it. The author mentioned that xm2Rss is based on the original gmail2Rss script developed by muadib.blogspot.com which has been abandoned last year.

The xm2Rss script allows the developer or user to pass in their username and password and the script generates a dynamic RSS XML sheet containing information about their account, such as: Amount of new messages, number of total messages, amount of space used, and more.

Xm2Rss is a free software.

The Gmail Notifier is an application that alerts you when you have new Gmail messages. It displays an icon in your system tray to let you know if you have unread Gmail messages, and shows you their subjects, senders and snippets, all without your having to open a web browser.

Note that if you already have the Google Talk client installed, you will automatically receive new mail notifications from Google Talk and you do not need to install the Notifier. But unfortunately, no Google Talk for Mac OS X version yet.

Open up a copy of google talk on all computers with which you wish to conference. After one copy is opened make a new shortcut for google talk but at the end of it add /nomutex. If you installed it to the default folder then your shortcut should read “C:\Program Files\Google\Google Talk\googletalk.exe” /nomutex. Open 2 instances of the software on every user’s computer. After this start a chain: User 1 should connect on one instance to user 2. User 2 will connect on his second instance to user 3. User 3 will connect using his second instance back to user 1. With this chain everyone is connected to everyone.

GMail soon became popular because they offer a huge storage space, 1GB. The size of this huge space keeps incerasing time over time, and know it reaches 2.5GB. That big storage space is the idea behind GMail Drive.

GMail Drive is a Shell Namespace Extension that creates a virtual filesystem around your Google Gmail account, allowing you to use Gmail as a storage medium. GMail Drive creates a virtual filesystem on top of your Google Gmail account and enables you to save and retrieve files stored on your Gmail account directly from inside Windows Explorer. GMail Drive literally adds a new drive to your computer under the My Computer folder, where you can create new folders, copy and drag’n'drop files to. With GMail Drive you can easily copy files to your Gmail account and retrieve them again. Screenshot below shows the copy process from other drive to virtual drive from GMail Drive.

So how does it work? When you create a new file (copy or move file to the virtual drive), GMail Drive works in the background by generating an e-mail and post that files to your GMail account. That emaill appears in your normal. The e-mail appears in your normal Inbox folder, and the file is attached as an e-mail attachment. Periodically, GMail Drive checks your GMail account, using GMail search function, to see if a new files have arrived and to rebuild the directory structures of the virtual drive.

Since email from GMail Drive will exist on your Inbox folder, it is recommended to create a filter in GMail to automatically move those emails (prefixed with the GMAILFS letters in the subject) to your archived mail folder. If you’re too lazy to do that, you can also create another GMail account and use it completely for your storage medium.

Several notes from the GMail Drive author:

Several limitations exist on the file-system. For example, the maximum length of the filename is 40 characters.

Any changes in the GMail system may stop GMail Drive from working correctly. He also cannot guarantee that files stored in GMail using GMail Drive will be accessible in the future (if the GMail system changed).

If you want to try GMail Drive, make sure you download version 1.07. Google recently changed GMail system, so the previous GMail Drive version won’t work.

It’s pretty exciting to see those words on the Gmail homepage. For the last 16 months, a lot of people have been asking us how they can sign up for Gmail, and today we’re happy to be able to say, “Just go to gmail.com.” From there, you can get an invitation code sent to your mobile phone, and with this code, you can create a Gmail account. Once you have Gmail, you can try out our brand new IM and voice service, Google Talk.

Unfortunately, this public signup only work with U.S. mobile phone numbers. If you live outside U.S, you still have to wait.

Even on BlogsOfTheDay list, there are 9-10 posts about this instant messenger from Google since yesterday. And it’s not over yet. Those articles keeps coming and coming!

Anyway, among hundreds of those GTalk-related articles, here’s one good reading, GTalk Tweaks. It lists several interesting tweaks you can use on your GoogleTalk (or GTalk). Including command parameter list, modifying the button and menu, and editing the registry key. A recommended article for those who want to take full control of their GTalk.

GTalk itself is an instant messenger software, from Google, which based on Jabber-protocol. Using GTalk, you can send message and voice chat with your friends all around the world, in real-time. To use this instant messenger, you need a GMail account, and optionally download their GTalk software (you can use other instant messenger software that also using Jabber-protocol to access GTalk).
