The file sharing service is any website who let anyone to upload their files to the server and then make it available for others to download. The file sharing service provider usually has their own limitation, such as the size of the file, the number of download allowed, etc.

Below is a comprehensive list of free (large) file sharing service on the internet. Most of these kind of services have the same method to upload/download the file (read my tutorial for MegaUpload and SaveFile), so I’m sure you won’t have any trouble with them.

BitTorrent, which is optimized for downloading large files, was accounting for more than half of all the file-swapping traffic on Internet service provider networks around the world.

Now it seems that we have a new winner. eDonkey, its rival who actually have more power to search for content, but similar speedy download features, is now used more than BitTorrent. eDonkey’s rise comes after highly publicized Hollywood legal campaigns against BitTorrent hubs, which have resulted in the disappearance of many of the most popular sites using that technology. The Motion Picture Association of America is also targeting eDonkey users, but that network has gained less publicity. Moreover, eDonkey also has been translated into local languages in many countries around the world, aiding its spread overseas.

Other surveys have previously noted that eDonkey had long since replaced Kazaa as the network with the most numbers of simultaneous users. CacheLogic’s survey focuses instead on the volume of data flowing through networks.

Sony, teamed up with Playlouder MSP, in this Music Swapping Network, will allow subscribers to exchange license music in any bitrate they want freely. A portion of the subscription fees will be divided among Sony and other artists.

Playlouder MSP is to supply the broadband connection itself. This is the same basic idea as used by radio where the revenue generated compensates the artists. Playlouder MSP, as the world’s only licensed music ISP, will be able to control the flow of music files over its network, ensuring that all file sharing traffic stay within its ‘walled-garden‘.

Moreover, the company stated that by controlling the network on which the music flows, Playlouder MSP is able to effectively and accurately track and monitor the distribution of digital music through a sophisticated method of audio fingerprinting and return the appropriate share of revenues back to the rights owners.

To prevent any possible leakage, PlayLouder MSP will deploy watermarks and “deep packet searches” software on the network.

The service will go live in the UK-only next month.

Previously, I give my review about GMail Drive, a shell extension for Windows Explorer. Using GMail Drive you’ll get a virtual drive on your Explorer window (which connect to your GMail account) and you can store your files on that drive. GMail Drive will automatically send it to your GMail account and store the file there. But now there’s Peer2Mail. This software allows you to store and share your files on ANY webmail account which offer large storage space (ranges between 100MB and 3GB), such as GMail, Walla!, Yahoo Mail, and more.

Peer2Mail works by spliting the file you want to store or share, zip it, and encrypt it. Later, Peer2Mail then sends the file segments one by one to your webmail account. Once Peer2Mail uploaded all file segments, you can download them and use Peer2Mail to merge the segments back to the original file.

What you get with Peer2Mail (taken from their website):

Peer2Mail gives you the ability to store files on any web-mail account. You can access and download those files from any computer.

You can share files with your friends and family. Just create an email account, upload files to it, and give access to your family and friends.

Make your mail account safe by sharing an encrypted password; Giving your friends restricted access. Each segment is encrypted using AES algorithm to protect your privacy.

Auto download makes your email account act like a regular ftp/http server. Download files at amazing speeds!

Peer2Mail automatically zips each segment; This way you save precious storage space on your web-mail account.

Peer2Mail has a built in SMTP component, so you can directly send files without a need for an SMTP server. If you wish, Peer2Mail can send files using your Outlook client.

Peer2Mail does not contain spyware and its 100% free!

The latest version of Peer2Mail is v1.60 Build 4. You can get it from the download link below. I’ll get my hand on this software soon and give my personal review on it. If it’s good enough, I’ll add it to my large file sharing tutorial series :p

Previously, on my tutorial about sharing large file on the web using MegaUpload service, I’ve promised that I’d wrote another tutorial for another similar large file sharing service. So here it goes.

This time we’re going to try SaveFile. The file size limit and the time limit is lowered than MegaUpload, only 60MB file size and 14 days (no one download the uploaded file for 14 days). Compared with MegaUpload who gives 250MB file size limit and 30 days time limit. So why I choose SaveFile for this tutorial? Because not many people use this service yet, so you might get much better download speed compare with other similar service.

Quoted from their website:

This service can be used for uploading files up to 60MB each. After uploading you will be given a link, that others can use to download your file. Our filesize limit is 60MB and each file can be downloaded unlimited times.
Savefile is completly free to use, hope you will enjoy our service.

Uploading File tutorial

As usual, let’s start by going to SaveFile website. Click on Upload My File button on the bottom of the page.

On the next page, you’ll be asked to choose between Standard or Member section. If you have time to spend with the registration, choose Member. But if not, just choose Standard. Both are free, but Member option gives several extra features. This tutorial will go with the Standard option.

Now, we enter the information about the file we’re going to upload. Click on Browse to choose the file. Then enter the title and the description of the file on the Title and Description textbox. Don’t forget to type the correct security code (all number I guess). Click Upload File when you’re ready to upload the file.

The following tutorial will explain you how to share a large file on the web between you and your friend or anyone else. I’m choosing MegaUpload as an example here – not for any particular reason – but later, I might write more tutorial for other large file sharing service, such as YouSendIt and RapidShare.

One of the most advantage of using MegaUpload, compare with other similar service, is the duration how long your file(s) will be kept in their server. Your uploaded files will be deleted only after it become unused for 30 days. So, if many of your friends download it, over and over again, the files will always be there. The size is quite big, up to 250MB. Not as big as YouSendIt which allow up to 1GB file size, but it’s more than enough to share your music files, movies, etc.

From MegaUpload main page:

Why do they use Megaupload?

People use Megaupload.com because we are simply the best way to get large and small files from one person to another over the internet.

It eliminates the following problems:

It is more secure than normal e-mail.

You don’t have to worry about the size of file and being rejected because their e-mail server won’t allow a file that big or their e-mail is full.

If you send a file to several people and discover you forgot someone you don’t have to upload the attachment again. Simply send the megaupload file link to the person you forgot.

The download is the exact file you uploaded and no one had a chance to spoof or replace the file with another. Our servers are secure and after a file is uploaded and you have the link it can be removed but not changed.

Now you are able to e-mail out from an internet cafe, friends PC, or while you’re at a company pc. You can easily upload the files from the PC and then download them when you get to your destination.

Stop being shouted at by your friends saying it took forever to get your e-mail attachment and they couldn’t receive or send an e-mail until it’s completed. Not everyone is on a high speed connection and files get larger everyday. By sending the link people can download your files at their leisure when they are ready.

Eliminate country or domain blocking problems for e-mail. Because of spam more and more companies are implementing new rules about receiving e-mails. It is not uncommon for companies to delete e-mail from certain countries or even domains. If someone can’t receive your e-mail just telephone them and give them the file link over the telephone. This will allow them to download the file easily and simply.

Okay, I guess that’s enough for the introduction. Let’s move on to the real tutorial )

How to Upload Files

Go to MegaUpload website (off course!)

Click on the Browse button to select which file you want to upload. A file dialog will open.

Choose the file and select Ok.

Give a description of file you upload on the File Description, so everyone who download it know for sure what file it is. If you want to send notification to a specific person, enter his/her email address on the Recipient Address and your own email address on the Your Email. Click Send.

File upload progress will begin. You can see the current progress on the right.

Once the upload finished, the progress bar will change.

Look at the top part of the screen (where the Select File to Send textbox appear before). Now there’s a unique URL on it. This is the download address of your file. If you want someone to download the file you’ve just uploaded, just give them that URL.

How to Download Files

Go to the download URL. The following page will appear. Note that there’s a 45 secs counter on the top. As a free member, you have to wait until the counter expired before you can download the file.

Once the 45 secs counter passed, message below will appear. Just click on it to download the file.

That’s it. Both upload and download tutorial for a complete share file how-to )

Btw, MegaUpload also put a brief tutorial on how to upload file.

To upload a file just follow these simple steps:

Select a file to send by clicking the “Browse” button. You can then select photos, audio, video, documents or anything else you want to send. The maximum file size is 250 MB.

You may choose who you want to send a file to. If you just want to get the link to your file stored on our server leave the optional fields blank.

Click the “Send” button to start uploading the file. You will see the progress of the file transfer, please don’t close your browser window while uploading or it will cancel the upload.

If you entered an optional recipient e-mail address they will be sent the link of the file. They can then simply click the link to your file to download it.

If you entered optionally your email address you will be sent the link and delete-link to your file stored on our server. You can share it for example on forums, websites, messengers, etc.

Hope this help :d

A tips for having unlimited downloads on YouSendIt file sharing service. By default, YouSendIt only allowed 25 downloads or 7 days expiration per file. Using the following tips, your uploaded file now can have unlimited downloads. Oh, btw, the tips is taken from this forum.

Go to yousendit.com and upload your file.

After you get your link, which will look something like this:
s36.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0BPNHKYF24AL50IJ836YY8YUET

Go to -www.yousendit.digitekk.biz-

Inside of the top text field put the s36

Inside of the lower text field put the 0BPNHKYF24AL50IJ836YY8YUET

Finally click the button below.

You will now get a new link which can’t be block and also has unlimited downloads. This is the result (just an example):

http://yousendit.digitekk.biz/download.php?id=7659

Enjoy!
