I once posted about a torch that is powered by a shake. It’s quite handy because you’ll get an unlimited power source. It implements Faraday’s Law of Induction and uses combination of kinetic energy and induction to transform the shakes into energy. Gadgets.Co.Uk is currently selling a calculator that uses the same principle. Named Shake-U-Later, you have to shake the calculator first before you can use it.

Every 25 shakes from side to side generates enough energy for 10 minutes of mathematical calculation. The calculator costs around $15.

Taxi’s Rooftop Wind Energy Charges Cell Phones

Ecolo21 Co., Ltd, a taxi company in Japan, is offering a cell phone’s battery charging service to the passengers. It uses the electricity generated by a wind turbine mounted on a taxi’s roof. This service is to promote the use of clean energy following the enactment of the Kyoto Protocol.

The taxi’s rooftop wind turbine has a built-in generator so that wind energy is converted to electricity. The electricity is stored in the car’s battery and then sent to a cigarette lighter socket. By connecting a charger to the socket, passengers can charge their cell phones. The company installed this system in one of its taxis, and it is planning to install an improved version in its remaining 19 taxis by the autumn of 2005.

I always write about something that interest me. But among those subjects, one thing that really interest me is solar-powered device and anything about solar power technology. I think someday we might live inside a house that totally use solar energy to power everything inside, including my lovely PC.

Solar power describes a number of methods of harnessing energy from the light of the sun. It has been present in many traditional building methods for centuries, but has become of increasing interest in developed countries as the environmental costs and limited supply of other power sources such as fossil fuels are realized. It is already in widespread use where other supplies of power are absent such as in remote locations and in space. [ source ]

Anyway, this is a solar-powered lamp for your backyard, named Titan Solar Lamp. Not something new since there’s already another solar-powered lamp like this. But heck, this thing uses solar energy, so bear with me, I love solar :p

The Titan Solar Lamp costs 32,33 Euros. It will automatically turn the light on at night, so you don’t need to operate it by yourself. And since it uses solar energy, it doesn’t require electricity or battery as well. Just make sure you put it on the spot where it’ll get enough sunlight.

Solar-Powered Autonomous Underwater Vehicle

Check out this new solar-powered autonomous underwater vehicle. It is designed to provide better observation and monitoring of complex aquatic systems. This vehicle can be used for testing dissolved oxygen levels for example, as well as applications to environmental management and security and defense programs.

The solar-powered autonomous underwater vehicle works using integrated sensor microsystems, pervasive computing, wireless communications, and sensor mobility with robotics. In real time, they will network with one another to assess a water body as a whole. The U.S. Navy has paid attention to this vehicle and will evaluate their use for coastal surveillance applications.

The SAUV weighs 370 pounds, moves slowly at 2 miles per hour, but can dive to depths up to 500 meters.

DIY Solar Powered Model

Several DIY solar powered models. Not sure how they’d work after we constructed it, as the website doesn’t give much information about. Only the dimension of each model, but not the price, instruction, etc. Well, I assume the plane and the helicopter can really fly and the windmill and watermill wheel would spin around, all with the solar power. That’d be really cool if my assumption is correct.
