Cingular Wireless introduces Cingular Mobile Email service for non-business users. This service, powered by OZ Communication inc., lets user to get BlackBerry-like mobile access to their personal e-mail accounts from AOL, Yahoo and MSN Hotmail on a cell phone. It is already designed to adapt the look and capabilities of a Web portal or e-mail program such as Outlook to the limited screen size, keyboard and processing power of a garden variety handset.

Users have to download a Java-based email application to be able to use the Cingular’s service. Initially, starting Monday, it will be available for 5 Motorola Inc. mobile phone’s models and one from Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. Particular new phones will also get the software pre-installed.

There’s no monthly charge for Cingular Mobile Email, but users will need to subscribe to one of the company’s wireless Internet plans with a monthly allotment of data usage. Jim Ryan, a Cingular vice president, said a $5 monthly data plan should provide sufficient capacity to check one’s e-mail a few times daily.

Fetching e-mail on a cell phone has been possible for some time, generally by using a mobile Web browser or a downloadable third-party application. But the process is often cumbersome: Users need to click through multiple menus, type in Web addresses, sign in using a telephone keypad, and scroll about to read poorly formatted messages on a small screen.

More than 800 copies of mutant Trojan, purports to be Skype v1.4 VoIP client software, has been intercept by MessageLabs this week. Virus maker probably getting bored attacking the other instant messanging services and thus start finding a new target?

When executed the malware displays a fake ‘installation error’ box while installing itself as ‘%sysdir%\remote.exe’, altering the registry and shutting down shared access and Windows update services.

It then tries, but fails, to connect to either an IRC server named ‘jojogirl.3322.org’ (channel name #Phantom) or ’smallphantom.meibu.com’.

The phishing email will appear that it comes directly from Skype, according to Maksym Schipka, a senior antivirus researcher at MessageLabs. It will arrive in the email with the following subject line and body text:

Subject:

Hello. We’re Skype and we’ve got something we would like to share with…; Share Skype.; Skype for Windows 1.4; Skype for Windows 1.4 – Have you got the new Skype?; What is Skype?

Say you’re in the subway, and there’s an ad with a URL and you have a phone but can’t go online. You just key in a number and when you next go online, you get an email delivering the information you want. Advertisers have a bridge between offline and online, it claims.

It costs one Euro to deliver an email doesn’t cost the consumer anything and it’s relatively cheap for advertisers. Allisblue assures us that while the advertiser knows a valid mail has been delivered, it doesn’t get your email, so you won’t be spammed in future. Ford and others are already experimenting with the technology.

Their technology is already patented in Europe, but still pending in the USA.

Later, recipients can also reply by email within five days. The ‘MMS-to-Email’ MMS arrives in the recipients inbox embedded in a formatted HTML email. The email text will then transformed into an MMS. The service closes the MMS communication loop so network differences and international coverage are no longer issues for MMS senders and ensures all MMS get to intended email recipients.

MMS, short for Multimedia Message Service, is a store-and-forward method of transmitting graphics, video clips, sound files and short text messages over wireless networks using the WAP protocol. Carriers deploy special servers, dubbed MMS Centers (MMSCs) to implement the offerings on their systems. MMS also supports e-mail addressing, so the device can send e-mails directly to an e-mail address. The most common use of MMS is for communication between mobile phones.
MMS, however, is not the same as e-mail. MMS is based on the concept of multimedia messaging. The presentation of the message is coded into the presentation file so that the images, sounds and text are displayed in a predetermined order as one singular message. MMS does not support attachments as e-mail does. [ source ]

On the PC, when an email is received, the recipient and can either Play the Video MMS using Real Time or another player or look at the text and pictures included within the MMS mms to email. The recipient of the MMS is also given the opportunity to respond to the sender for free with up to 500 characters of text which is delivered back to the sender’s handset as a text-only MMS.

“3’s MMS-to-Email service is set to drive MMS usage on its network,” said David Springall, Yospace’s CTO. “Users need to feel reassured that their MMS will reach eventual recipients regardless of network or country. Our MMS-to-Email Gateway takes away one of the few remaining obstacles to mass use of MMS.”

I’ve tried this couple month ago using local mobile phone carriers, and it worked. You only need to send the email to specific email address and the message of the SMS on the body of the email, and the person you send the SMS to, will receive your message on their phone as an SMS. The format of the email address usually:

phonenumber@phone_carrier_domain_name.com

Short Message Service: available on digital GSM networks allowing text messages of up to 160 characters to be sent and received via the network operator’s message center to your mobile phone, or from the Internet, using a so-called “SMS gateway” website.
Want to give it a try? Here are the email addresses for the 6 most popular cellular phone carriers, taken from Tech-Recipes:

Yesterday, GoogleBlog, the official blog for Google, posted the detail about this change.

It’s pretty exciting to see those words on the Gmail homepage. For the last 16 months, a lot of people have been asking us how they can sign up for Gmail, and today we’re happy to be able to say, “Just go to gmail.com.” From there, you can get an invitation code sent to your mobile phone, and with this code, you can create a Gmail account. Once you have Gmail, you can try out our brand new IM and voice service, Google Talk.

Unfortunately, this public signup only work with U.S. mobile phone numbers. If you live outside U.S, you still have to wait.

It can be configured so that you don’t even have to use your keyboard to send the email. Recorded voice is compressed using MP3 format to reduce the size without losing the sound quality.

Add a personal touch to your emails with a voice message. Not only will you be able to finish your email more quickly, since you won’t have to hunt and peck at the keyboard, but your loved ones will be able to hear the sound of your voice or your kids’ voices. The USB Email Microphone uses powerful MP3 compression for clear sound, and it interfaces with and is powered by your computer’s USB port, so you don’t need an extra outlet.
