The MC-30 from McPay is a handy portable credit/debit card payment solution. Simply connect it to your cell phone and you can process the transaction anywhere using your own mobile phone. Along with the card reader, MC-30 also includes a printer which allows you to print the receipt right away after the payment processed. Furthermore, priced at 250,000 (KRW), it measures 7.8 x 9.3 x 4.3 cm and weighs 235 grams.

According to the company, another version which support IrDA, cable smart card, and Bluetooth connectivity will be available later in December.

PQI U510 – The Credit Card-Sized Flash Drive

World’s smallest USB disk? Maybe this one is still the winner. PQI realized that, and instead of trying to make their flash disk smaller, they go with the world’s thinnest record and present the U510 model. At just 3 mm thick, they probably have won the record. At least for now. The U510 flash drive itself, measures 85 x 54 x 3 mm – almost the same size of a credit card, offers a 16GB of storag capacity and a rectrable USB 2.0 jack.

Samsung SCH-V870 – The Platinum Card Cell Phone

Samsung Electronics recently launched the SCH-V870 on Tuesday. This ultra-slim cell phone, dubbed as the Platinum Card Phone, is aimed the business people. Measures at just 0.5.4 x 8.7 x 0.89 cm – as thick as credit card -, this phone will fit easily into pocket or even wallet. The features itself are quite standard – MP3 player capability, 1.3 megapixel camera module with video recording function, and external memory slot. However, to support business productivity, Samsung is smart enough to equip this SCH-V870 phone with an electronic dictionary, mobile printing capability, and file viewer. The package includes a business-card sized leather case and a 400mAh complementary battery.

Samsung SGH-P300 – Credit-Card Sized Phone

Samsung is ready to release their new mobile phone featuring a credit-card size form factor. The cell phone will targets GSM networks and comes with GPRS support. It spots a 1.3 megapixel camera and 90MB internal Flash memory. Samsung SGH-P300 supports Bluetooth and equipped with a built-in email client.

Not much information about this mobile phone yet. I’ll post more later if there are any.

Smart Parking Meter Accepts Credit Card and Sends SMS

A new parking meter system is current being tested in Los Angeles. This smart parking meter system have an ATM-style meters and able to accept cash, debit cards, and credit cards. So whenever you run out of money to pay your parking fee, just use your debit cards or credit cards.

Another unique capability of the new parking meter is sending SMS message when the meter is about expire. If you want to purchase extra parking time, simply reply to the message, and you’ll be charged automatically.

According to several comments in Engadget, the smart parking meter system is not really new as several other cities/countries already start to use it for a long time ago.

MasterCard Will Start to Use Swipeless RFID Credit Card

MasterCard is going to replace their standard credit card with the new PayPass swipeless RFID credit cards. They expect to have up to 4 million of them in circulation by the end of the year. Using the RFID technology (explained later), you only need to wave your credit card at at retailer’s reader posted near cash registers or gas pumps, no need to swipe the card or to sign your signature.

Radio frequency identification (RFID) is a method of remotely storing and retrieving data using devices called RFID tags. An RFID tag is a small object, such as an adhesive sticker, that can be attached to or incorporated into a product. RFID tags contain antennas to enable them to receive and respond to radio-frequency queries from an RFID transceiver. [ source ]

MasterCard, and other credit card company that already use swipeless card (American Express, JP Morgan Chase), claim that the new credit cards are as safe as the traditional credit cards.

As reported by Reuters, Ruth Ann Marshall, Americas president for MasterCard, said the pay-pass cards were “easier to use than cash” and were one of the products MasterCard was counting on to increase revenue and profits as it faces a variety of challenges in the marketplace, including new rivals and regulatory scrutiny.

“It’s just one of the … breakthroughs in technology that we’re pursuing in order to increase convenience and boost usage,” Marshall said.
