Ever wonder how some blogs make their way to the top, entering the elite group, and leave others behind? Yuna’s Village has made a research about those elite blogs by comparing 10 random blogs from Feedster’s Top 50 list and another 10 random blogs from Technorati’s Top 50 list. Eventhough the final conclusion might not 100% correct (especially with some disappointment about Feedster Top list result), but it’s still worth-reading with several good information, such as:

How often do the top bloggers update their sites
7 out of the top 10 Technorati’s sites update daily with multiple posts. The rest of the site owners blog at least a few times a week.

After reading the article, I think, at least, these are what you should do to make your blog raise to the top:

Blogged about news and current events, even politics.
I guess this is related to search engine. To know what people are currently looking for, check Technorati top search (available on their front page) or Google weekly top search on Google Zeitgeist. Current top search for Google, period 15 August 2005 – 22 August 2005 is Jude Law. People are currently looking for information and gossip about Jude Law and his split with Sienna Miller.

Write something original, not just copy-paste from other source.
Even if you blogged about the current popular events, try not just copy-paste from other source. Give your own thoughts and opinions about that topic. That way, people will see something different from your post, not just a duplicate from the others.

Older blogs get a better change to hit the elite rank.
Again, I guess this is still about search engine and popularity. Older sites usually have better rank than newer site since they already have some time to build their rank using every SEO techniques they know.

Update your blog often.
Again, people love something fresh. If they see your blog updated regularly, they will also visit yours regularly. Oh, and according to Puji from JalanSutera, search engine crawler also like sites that update often.

Alright, if you’re moving from Bunny Tags to Ultimate Tag Warrior. (like me), here’s what you should do to convert your previous Bunny Tags tags to Ultimate Tag Warrior tags. Incase you didn’t know yet, Ultimate Tag Warrior is a wonderful Wordpress plugin which enable you to convert your blog, from category-based blog system, into tagged-based blog system. Using tagged-based system is much more convenient than using category-based system. Many popular web applications are now using tag instead of category. Flickr and Del.Icio.Us to name a few.

Back to the topic. Here are 2 things that I did to move from Bunny Tags to Ultimate Tag Warrior:

Import Custom Field.
Go to Manage – Tabs. On the very bottom of page, you can find the form to either Import or Export custom field. Enter “tags” (without quote) and press Import Custom Field. This will grab your previous Bunny Tags tags from each post and make them Ultimate Tag Warrior tags.

Modify Multi-Word Separator.
If you’re using the hack for your Bunny Tags to enable multi-words tag, you possible use ‘+’ (plus) character as a separator. For example: “blogging platform” is “blogging+platform” if you wrote it in Bunny Tags tag. The problem is, Ultimate Tag Warrior use either “_” (underscore) or “-” (dashed) character for multi-words tag. Since there’s no mass-editing feature to rename tags on Ultimate Tag Warrior, you have to deal directly with your database.
Open your PHPMyAdmin. Choose the database of your blog. Select SQL. Now enter the following SQL query:

update wp_tags set tag = replace(tag,'+','_');

Execute the query. This will modify Ultimate Tag Warrior tag table and replace the ‘+’ (plus) character with ‘_’ (underscore) character. Of course, you have to do step 1 first before you do this.
Note that this step is not necesarry if you’re not using the Bunny Tags hack.

That’s it :p

Darren of the ProBlogger recently posted a useful tips regarding our blog content. Based on these two statements:

Only 16% of people read web sites word for word. Source

The average person only comprehends 60% of what they read. Source

He suggests than we should make our blog content scannable by the reader. That way, they will more likely get the point of our post and spend more time in our site. To achieve this, he covered up several techniques, including using Lists, Formatting, Headings and Sub Headings, adding relevant Pictures, and using Borders/Blockquotes. Here are some interesting points:

Headings and Sub Headings – Large, Bold words that act as visual cues of what is happening in the content are effective ways of drawing readers further into articles.

Pictures – Research shows that readers eyes are drawn down the page by pictures. Place them cleverly by your key points (especially when they closely relate to the content) and you have more of a chance of getting readers to read full articles.

Space – don’t feel you have to fill up every inch of your screen – rather create spaces because they help readers not to feel overwhelmed and again tend to draw readers eyes to what is inside such space

Now go ahead! Make your content more scannable and satisfy your readers )

I took them from Tara Tainton’s blog. What are they anyway?

No, NOT something dirty at all ) Here’re the description from her site:

Blog Naked: to blog free of societal or cultural constraints, free of inhibition, free of hatred, free of your own fears or consideration of judgment from others, free of hang-ups or baggage, free of anything that holds you back from being your real self and proudly sharing it with the world.

and

Blog Truth: to blog the truth as it exists for you, regardless of how it may be received by others, to aid the expansion of knowledge worldwide, to enlighten and challenge others through opening their eyes to unique perspectives by representing your gender, race, culture, profession, skill set, etc. with unabashed honesty.

These are some kind of our blog behaviour and ourself as a blog writer. Do you feel free to write anything on your blog? Do you afraid something bad can happen if someone read your blog’s article? Do you tell the truth on your blog, and no matter what is it, you express what you think is right or wrong? If yes, come and join the club LOL )

In here and here, I wrote what I feel about Padi’s and Ello’s album (Padi is one of the greatest band in Indonesia, while Ello is one of the most popular new comer singer in this year). Of course, I got several ‘feedback‘ for what I said :p

And in this article, I post something that become one of my interest. I don’t admit that I like to see it ) And eventhough I regularly read ErosBlog and Kinja|Sex, that don’t make me a freaking sex maniac (I hope, at least for now :d )

So everyone, please feel free to express yourself on your blog. There’re already too much bullshit in the real world (Hi Roy) and lot of people wearing mask to communicate with people, so don’t become part of them, at least on your own blog. And that’s why my blog’s title is “My Other Side of the Stories”….
