Not just one, but two. The first is special for Blogger sites, and the second goes worldwide. The end for Technorati, Feedster, or IceRocket?

Quoted from Google Blog Search official page:

What is Blog Search?

Blog Search is Google search technology focused on blogs. Google is a strong believer in the self-publishing phenomenon represented by blogging, and we hope Blog Search will help our users to explore the blogging universe more effectively, and perhaps inspire many to join the revolution themselves. Whether you’re looking for Harry Potter reviews, political commentary, summer salad recipes or anything else, Blog Search enables you to find out what people are saying on any subject of your choice.

Blogger user now could take advantage of their special Google Blog Search. Very nice strategy from Google to eliminate their competitor on free blog hosting market. With this new feature from Google, I’d probably make one or two blogs on Blogger.

Google Blog Search works by indexing blog feeds. Google said that the feeds will be checked frequently for new content. It means, using Blog Search will return fresher or newest result than their standard search engine. Also, according to Google, because of the structured data within site feeds, it is possible to find precise posts and date ranges with much greater accuracy.

You can also subribe to the top 10 or top 100 search results as either Atom or RSS feeds. Just take a look at the bottom of each page for the feed link.

In the blogosphere, pinging is like telling everyone that you’ve just updated your blog. Well, not exactly everyone. There are certain services that scans blog regularly for updates and publishes the recently updated blogs. So you only need to tell these services once you’ve updated your blog by pinging them, and they will tell the world about your updated blog.

Most blogging software already have build-in ability to ping those kind of services. Usually, you only need to enter the address of the service, and everytime you publish a new post on your blog, it will automatically ping the services on the list.

A blog ping is just a piece of text, in simple words. It’ll contain your blog name and the url. A blog ping is usually sent in the XML format. The servers that accept ping have specialiced procedures for accepting and processing these ‘XML pings’. The API, a bridge between server and developer, available for XML format is XML-RPC. There is another API to ping the server, called REST.

There are several sources for the list of XML-RPC (and RPC2) ping services. EliottBack has a huge list of RPC and RPC2 services (over 56 RPC and RPC2). Emily (from HowToBlog) also put about 20-25 RPC and RPC2 service on her blog. Another one is from Ensight who has a list of around 43 RPC ping services.

The question is, do you have to use them all? In my opinion, no. Most of the ping services do ‘pararel’ ping, they also ping another ping service. So actually, you only need to choose several of them that, if combined, can cover the whole XML-RPC blog ping service. Or, choose the one that is reliable and popular enough.

My recommendation:

http://pingoat.com/goat/RPC2
api.feedster.com/ping
api.my.yahoo.com/RPC2
api.my.yahoo.com/rss/ping
www.blogshares.com/rpc.php
www.blogsnow.com/ping
http://www.blogstreet.com/xrbin/xmlrpc.cgi
http://mod-pubsub.org/kn_apps/blogchatt
http://www.mod-pubsub.org/kn_apps/blogchatter/ping.php
ping.blo.gs/
ping.feedburner.com
ping.syndic8.com/xmlrpc.php
ping.weblogalot.com/rpc.php
rpc.blogrolling.com/pinger/
rpc.icerocket.com:10080/
rpc.pingomatic.com/
rpc.technorati.com/rpc/ping
rpc.weblogs.com/RPC2
xping.pubsub.com/ping/

Pingoat is a good replacement for Ping-O-Matic (still down?). It covers over 54 ping services, including the other XML-RPC services I recommend above.

Ever wonder how some blogs make their way to the top, entering the elite group, and leave others behind? Yuna’s Village has made a research about those elite blogs by comparing 10 random blogs from Feedster’s Top 50 list and another 10 random blogs from Technorati’s Top 50 list. Eventhough the final conclusion might not 100% correct (especially with some disappointment about Feedster Top list result), but it’s still worth-reading with several good information, such as:

How often do the top bloggers update their sites
7 out of the top 10 Technorati’s sites update daily with multiple posts. The rest of the site owners blog at least a few times a week.

After reading the article, I think, at least, these are what you should do to make your blog raise to the top:

Blogged about news and current events, even politics.
I guess this is related to search engine. To know what people are currently looking for, check Technorati top search (available on their front page) or Google weekly top search on Google Zeitgeist. Current top search for Google, period 15 August 2005 – 22 August 2005 is Jude Law. People are currently looking for information and gossip about Jude Law and his split with Sienna Miller.

Write something original, not just copy-paste from other source.
Even if you blogged about the current popular events, try not just copy-paste from other source. Give your own thoughts and opinions about that topic. That way, people will see something different from your post, not just a duplicate from the others.

Older blogs get a better change to hit the elite rank.
Again, I guess this is still about search engine and popularity. Older sites usually have better rank than newer site since they already have some time to build their rank using every SEO techniques they know.

Update your blog often.
Again, people love something fresh. If they see your blog updated regularly, they will also visit yours regularly. Oh, and according to Puji from JalanSutera, search engine crawler also like sites that update often.

Most of you already know what Ping-O-Matic service is. If not, just visit their site here for an explanation about their ping service (errr… I’m not lazy to give my own explanation about Ping-O-Matic. Actually I already wrote it, then Firefox crashed. So it’s all gone, I have to rewrite this post, and no thanks, I don’t want to rewrite my long detail explanation about Ping-O-Matic again…). Wordpress and some other blogging engine, already have build-in function to automatically send notification to Ping-O-Matic everytime we write a new post, so it can send pingback to several ping services.

What if your favourite blogging engine doesn’t have that feature? Well, you have to do it manually from their site. Just enter the URL and the title of your blog, select which service to ping, submit. In the end of the ping processes, you’ll be offered to save or bookmarked a ‘unique’ link. Next time, if you want to notify Ping-O-Matic again, you don’t have to enter your blog URL and blog title again. Just activate that link and Ping-O-Matic will do the rest.

Now, the problem is, what if we have more than one blog that need to notify Ping-O-Matic manually? Using that ‘traditional’ method, you may end up with many links for Ping-O-Matic. What if we have just one link that work for all of our blogs? So no matter what your blog is, just activate the link, and it will automatically send notification to Ping-O-Matic.

Okay, first, here’s the code:

javascript:location.href='http://pingomatic.com/ping/?title='+encodeURIComponent(document.title)+'&blogurl='+encodeURIComponent(location.href)+'&chk_weblogscom=on&chk_blogs=on&chk_technorati=on&chk_feedburner=on&chk_syndic8=on&chk_newsgator=on&chk_feedster=on&chk_myyahoo=on&chk_pubsubcom=on&chk_blogdigger=on&chk_blogrolling=on&chk_blogstreet=on&chk_moreover=on&chk_weblogalot=on&chk_icerocket=on&chk_audioweblogs=on&chk_rubhub=on&chk_geourl=on&chk_a2b=on&chk_blogshares=on'

If you notice, I replace the title and URL with JavaScript function which will automatically recognized our blog’s title and URL. Next, simply bookmark this link or drag it to your bookmark toolbar (on Mozilla/Firefox) for quick access. Now everytime you finish updating your blog, just go to the main page of your blog, and hit that bookmarklet.

If you don’t want to migrate to Wordpress (or any other blogging engine that have automatic ping feature) yet, I guess this is the easiest way to work with Ping-O-Matic.

Right? )
