The new technology, called Bluetooth Media Server, will bring a completely new interaction between mobile phone users and the world around them. When attached to billboards, poster sites, retail locations, entertainment venues, public spaces or embedded in interactive kiosks, the Bluetooth MediaServer will identify each consumer’s Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone or handset and deliver a tailored message or advertisement to them.

Wiremedia’s Bluetooth Mediaserver is a small pocket-sized caching server that delivers customized, rich media content and applications directly to cell phones, within a range of 100 to 300 meters (approximately 300 to 1000 feet) of a specific location, at broadband speed. Cell phone users can receive coupons, video, audio, photos, text messages, MMS, SMS, Java applications, etc. Wiremedia’s customers are businesses seeking to provide location-based coupons, contextual advertising, and localized information to cell phone users within their vicinity.

As an AdSense publishers, one of the phenomenon you should handle is “Ad Blindness“. If you don’t take care of it properly, you may loss lot of potential earning.

So what is Ad Blindness?

Before we talk about Ad Blindness, let’s go back to 1998. At that time, Benway and Lane, a research team, reported the result of studies requiring users to find information located in banned ads. Contrary to the prevailing marketing philosophy that the larger an item on a Web page, the greater its perceived visual importance and likelihood of attracting attention, Benway and Lane found that users had more difficulty finding information when it was located in a banner ad. Benway and Lane called this phenomenon “Banner Blindness” [ source ]

The point is, banner blindness is the tendency of people to ignore banner ads on Web sites. Experts believe that banner blindness occurs because experienced Web users are in “search mode” and tend to ignore banner ads as irrelevant for their search. [ source ]

Ad Blindness is similar to Banner Blindness. In the context of Google AdSense, Ad Blindness occurs when the colors of your AdSense ads stick out too much, thus make the readers immediately identify them as ads and not even look at them. It can also happen to frequent readers who visit the site regularly. As they start getting used to it, they will, at certain point, ignore the ads.

One of the solution to handle Ad Blindness is to regularly change the AdSense ads layout or positioning, probably once a month. You can also try to rotate the AdSense color template, so visitors will see a different AdSense color everytime it appears. Another solution is to blend AdSense ads more with your site, as it will likely reduce the chance of Ad Blindness’ occurance.

Don’t forget to use AdSense channel feature. It’s a good tool to find out whether your AdSense ads unit has suffered from the Ad Blindness or not. If one (or more) of them received low CTR, then your visitors probably do not aware of that ads unit.

According to Yahoo! Search blog, Yahoo! has launched a beta network of their ad-network for small-and medium-sized published, called Yahoo! Publisher Network Self-Serve. This service is much similar to Google AdSense, but will use human-editorial judgement to the selection of ads for content pages. In this beta stage, membership currently available via invitation only, and limited to US publishers. They expect to extend the beta to more publishers by the end of the year.

“I’m proud to announce today that Yahoo! has launched a beta network in the U.S. for small- and medium-sized publishers. Currently available through invitation only, as Yahoo! tests and refines the new platform, small- and medium-sized publishers can easily sign up online and access new revenue sources and enhanced Yahoo! content through our new self-serve platform. Our goal is to extend the beta to more publishers by the end of the year.” (Yahoo! Search Blog)

This new service will surely make the competition between Yahoo! and Google become stronger. There’s a chance for Yahoo! to take back the web search domination after it has been taken by Google for the last several years. Especially because this human-judgement method will probably much better than Google’s technology for determining what ads are related to publisher’s content. Yahoo! already made a groundwork on this area by releasing Y!Q, code that analyzes the text of a Web page and shows search results based on its content, earlier this year.

“Laying the groundwork in this area earlier this year, Yahoo released Y!Q, code that analyzes the text of a Web page and shows search results based on its content. Publishers can add the code to their Web pages to automatically generate a list of related links. Tapping small publishers offers a promising growth path, given Google’s earlier efforts in this niche.” (RealTech News)
