Because changing the angle of any laptop screen so changes the luminance, I don't use it for any serious editing; plus, I don't bother calibrating it (the colors are quite close with the NEC monitor calibration profile).
I have narrowed my selections to two monitors, based on forums, review sites. Planar PX2611W · NEC 2490. The best info I have found on these was from several hard forum threads. Basically what I summed up is that the NEC is far superior

IPS panel, standard-gamut monitor. There are other IPS panels out there, but some are wide gamut (Planar, Doublesight) which is downright terrible. The only other 1920x1200 IPS with standard gamut is the NEC 2490 - costing $1200.
Reidreviews.com article on the the NEC 2490 WUXI monitor with Spectraview II is a very good one if you have some cash. Several owners commenting on this monitor prefer it over the 26" version and have mentioned the LaCie and the 2490
the NEC 2690 is as a wider gammut display, NOt the NEC 2490 and none of the apple's LCD. I think the reponse time is more important if you want to use it for gamming! XBOX PS3 I strongly recommend The NEC.

For a couple of years I've been using a pretty good calibrated Samsung 213T (PVA display) sRGB monitor and if it does allow for finer sRGB color adjustments, I can't say that I've noticed it or miss it. That being said, the NEC 2490
Another question — how would you rate the NEC 2490 as compared with other LCD monitors for color-critical photoediting & print output? For instance: HP LP 2465. Samsung 245T Dell Ultrasharp 2408WFP And of course comparable 24″ Eizo
I was going to get that new NEC monitor but it's still so new and hardly available that I'll wait. Then I read about Dell and saw all the positive reviews so I was going to get that one but the price is still high.
