As reported by Router, NEC is going to develop a hybrid player for both next generation’s HD formats, HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. We still have to wait until early 2007 before we can give it a try, but at least now we know we don’t have to waste our money for buying separate HD-DVD and Blu-Ray player. Not much detail about the chipset for the player, except the product / model number – μPD63410 and μPC3360 – and the retail price – 10,000 Yen or $84.

The dual-format player’s chipset will not just help us as consumers but also those folks at the movie industry. The company targetted monthly shipments of 300,000 during the business year starting April 2007.
