Mozilla Firefox - Open Source Web BrowserAs reported by News.Com, Microsoft finally recognizes Firefox, the open source browser, as a competitor. In its latest annual report, Microsoft has for the first time taken note of the threat posed by the popular Firefox browser. They mention about Firefox in a section on competition for the Client unit. Microsoft not only noted its traditional operating system rivals, such as Unix and Linux, but also for various components that are a part of Windows, such as its media player.

“Competitors such as Mozilla offer software that competes with the Internet Explorer Web browsing capabilities of our Windows operating system products.”

Microsoft said that they believes, both current and future versions of Windows, will “continue to compete effectively with non-Microsoft browsers, media players, and other non-Microsoft programs.“, as stated below:

“We believe our operating system products compete effectively by delivering innovative software, an easy-to-use interface, compatibility with a broad range of hardware and software applications, and the largest support network for any operating system,”

The next head-to-head web browser battle between Mozilla and Microsoft will be started soon. Mozilla is planned to release Mozilla Firefox v1.5 next month (September), while Internet Explorer 7 will be released no later than the summer 2006.
