As reported by BBC, a new communication device is being tested at a Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust. It is a tiny-voice-activated badges – developed by BT – that hopefuly could replace the traditional devices – such as pagers, walkie-talkies, and mobile phones – for faster communication system, especially among the hospital staff. Weighs less than 20z (57g), the badge lets the staff to instantly communicate with each other simply by saying a person’s name or department. That means, they also don’t need to memorise the phone numbers or carry a phone book.

The talking badges communication system is already used in US. However, Cornwall Hospital is the first one in UK that takes advantage of this handy mobile communication device. According to Simon Goodwin, director of IT for the Cornwall NHS Community, a reliable and secure hospital communications system was vital.

“This new system is simple to use and will allow us to respond more quickly to our patients’ needs“, he said.
