Let’s see. MSN released Messenger v7.5 Final 2 days ago. Google came up with GoogleTalk (or GTalk) this morning. And now, Skype announced their upcoming products, SkypeWeb and SkypeNet API. Skype itself is a software that enable telephone conversations via the Internet. Calls to other Skype users are free as well as calls to regular telephone and mobile telephone numbers all over the world are at a low rate.
By using SkypeWeb, you can let your friends, families, or everyone know when you are free and make it easy for them to reach you from any web site, blog, email, or just about anything that can speak HTML. It’s not really something new, since other instant messenger (Yahoo! Messenger for example) already have this kind of service. Other instant messenger, who don’t have their own online indicator service, can make use of onlineindicator.org free service which support almost all popular instant messengers, including MSN, AIM, and ICQ.
How will it work? Simple actually, just tell Skype that you want to share your online status with the Web, copy and paste a few lines of HTML and script that Skype will give you and voila … your Skype status is on the Web.
Will SkypeWeb be much different than other online indicator? We still have to wait until Skype gives more information about this.
Their other upcoming product, SkypeNet API, is mostly for developer. Skype is planned to be an open IM system, and SkypeNet API is the backbone of it. Using SkypeNet API, programmers can create their own application that used or integrated with Skype instant messenger system. There’s no need to have the full version of Skype.
SkypeNet API will enable developers to access our IM and Presence system and bring it into new applications without needing to have the full version of Skype running on the machine. Think of it as mini Skype that can bring Skype to new places and let you do things you couldn’t do before.
SkypeNet API would be really useful for me, as programmer. I hope it’d be free of charge :p Anyway, I’m still waiting for their WiFi phone….
