Sending SMS Via Email

Mobile PhoneIncase you didn’t know yet, you can send SMS to others via email. I’ve tried this couple month ago using local mobile phone carriers, and it worked. You only need to send the email to specific email address and the message of the SMS on the body of the email, and the person you send the SMS to, will receive your message on their phone as an SMS. The format of the email address usually:

phonenumber@phone_carrier_domain_name.com

Short Message Service: available on digital GSM networks allowing text messages of up to 160 characters to be sent and received via the network operator’s message center to your mobile phone, or from the Internet, using a so-called “SMS gateway” website. If the phone is powered off or out of range, messages are stored in the network and are delivered at the next opportunity. [ source ]

Want to give it a try? Here are the email addresses for the 6 most popular cellular phone carriers, taken from Tech-Recipes:

  • T-Mobile: phonenumber @ tmomail.net
  • Virgin Mobile: phonenumber @ vmobl.com
  • Cingular: phonenumber @ cingularme.com
  • Sprint: phonenumber @ messaging.sprintpcs.com
  • Verizon: phonenumber @ vtext.com
  • Nextel: phonenumber @ messaging.nextel.com

Don’t forget to change the phonenumber to the recipient phone number. For any other phone carriers, try to ask their customer services / support for the email address.

Update: This site has a comprehensive list of mobile phone carrier and their email address to send the SMS via email along with the instruction.
