AOLAmerica Online (AOL) joined the VoIP market with its new internet telephony services, called “TotalTalk”. This VoIP internet phone service offers a unique combination by providing an adapter based device for makes calls over the internet using regular phone instruments, as well as using a PC to make/recieve calls.

VoIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol or also called Internet telephony) is the two-way transmission of phone conversations over an IP network, allowing audio to travel over the Internet, intranets, or private LANs (local area networks) and WANs (wide area networks). Currently, voice quality is poor. However, most telecom companies are working on this future growth aspect of their business, so quality is expected to improve soon. Users at both locations must have identical or compatible software. Calls may be made from PC-to-PC, PC-to-phone, or phone-to-phone, using an Internet telephony service provider (ITSP). Local plans start at US$18.99 per month allows for unlimited local calls and long distance for $0.039 per minute. You can also get an unlimited long distance within the U.S. and Canada for $29.99 a month. Another plan,the Global Calling Plan, includes unlimited domestic long distance calling for $34.99 a month and international calls at discounted rates.
