On December 5th, I’ve posted about MN 2000 Navigation System, a Java-based GPS service for your cell phones from VDO Dayton. While I thought that it is the first GPS phone service under Java (well, the company said so), it seems that there’s already another player in that area, the TeleNav.

TeleNav, like that one from VDO, is a Java-based GPS service. With the monthly fee of $9.99, this navigation service only works on several Nextel and Sprint cell phones though.

LaptopMag recently reviewed this service, and according to the result, it seems that MN2000 service is better than the TeleNav.

Make sure that you choose one with a speakerphone loud enough to knife through road noise. In testing the service with the Sanyo 5600, the only glitch we hit was a dead spot in Sprint’s data coverage in a rural area (just before we were supposed to get directions for a turn). TeleNav automatically offers spoken turn-by-turn directions for getting back on track, but coverage is something to consider if you’ll be using the service in the boondocks. Because TeleNav leaves the phone’s display constantly on, a car charger is a must-have.
