Sony has just announced further information about its upcoming gaming console, Playstation 3, which will very soon hit the market. According to the press release, PS3 will support a wide-range of media formats, including MPEG-2 (PS and TS), MPEG-1, H.264 / MPEG-4 AVC / SP video formats and MP3, ATRAC, AAC, WAV audio formats. Various image formats (JPEG, BMP, TIFF, GIFF, and PNG) are supported as well. The Blu-Ray player equipped on the machine will be able to read BD video, BD-R/RE, DVD±R/RW (VR-Modes is supported), Music CD’s, SACD along with support for AVCHD media. Furthermore, the next gen console will require a lot of power to run with around 380 watts of energy consumed. FYI, its rival, XBox 360 ‘only’ uses 160W of power, while a 45W of juice is enough to play Final Fantasy XII on PS2.

As previously announced, Sony will debut the Playstation 3 in Japan on November 11th and US on November 17th. Sadly, European will have to wait until March 2007 before they can taste the black-colored console.

I’m not sure when will I see PS3 on the local store in my country, but it doesn’t really matter. I’m not planning to get one from the start (PS2 is enough for me) and the latest news about the huge power consumption gives it more negative point on my list. Not to mention this horrible new PS3 commercials. Sorry Sony, but I’d definitely get Wii instead.
