Bonno GirlsHow many is too many? What about 108 (one hundred and eight)? That’s the number of member of the new pop group in Japan, Bonno Girls, who make their debut today. The complete name of the group is 100+8 SEXY GIRLS FROM V.S.O.O.P -Bonno Girls-. The idea of the name came from a religious concept: according to Buddhism, there are 108 bonno, or “earthly desires”. Additionally, the 100+8 means that 100 are “natural” girls (most of them models) and 8 are transvestites. In their debut, Bonno Girls release two limited CD edition. Each contains a set of 54 collectible cards, so you have to buy both in order to have all 108 girls’ pictures.

Their music production company, Victor Entertainment, is planning to request an entry in the Guiness Book of Records as the largest vocal performance group of the world. But the group itself, according to the producers, is planned to dissolve in the end of this year, on December 31st, when the bells start tolling (see explanation at the bottom of this post). The cause is, it’s too hard to manage that many group’s members at once.

Make-up alone costs hundreds of thousand yen,and it is very tough to arrange buses or anterooms. Interpersonal problems among members are rising, and all girls want to stand in the front, or get the main performance part. Doing anything is such a big hassle.“, said staff from the production company in the newspaper.

Buddhist temples across Japan toll their bells 108 times on New Year’s Eve. This ceremony is called “Joya-no-kane” and it is believed that the 108 desires can be left behind in order to start a purified New Year.
