IBM Brings 3D to Television

IBM recently demonstrated their technology for the low-cost high-resolution 3D images from a rear projector television or home-cinema projector at the 22nd annual Flat Information Displays conference in San Francisco on Wednesday, Nov. 9. To achieve the 3D effect, viewers must wear passive polarized glasses like those seen in IMAX theaters. According to the company, this technology could be built into a standard DLP television for less than $20.
IBM’s technology for the 3D TV, which does not have an official name yet, consists of a set of their own hardware and software. The special glasses above will help the hardware to take 3D content and splits it into two images that are later translated as a stereophonic image. The hardware is compatible with current VESA three-pin stereo interfaces, while the software is compatible with all OpenGL and Direct3D applications, which are widely used in PC video games.
