Say goodbye to download waiting time on Rapidshare, guys!

First of all, the actual title of this article is “How To Remotely Control Your Computer Using Other Computer Through LAN/WiFI Network“, but since it’s too long, I have to cut it down in the middle Okay, here’s the story… since I now have two laptops (well, five actually, but I’ve rarely used the others three), I think it’d be cool if I can use my old Acer 3274WXMi laptop for somekind of download machine. So this morning, I set up my room, placed my Acer on the computer desk, and replace its old location (beside my bed) with my new Sony VAIO FW139EH notebook. Since I’m a lazy guy and I think it’d be stupid to get up from my bed anytime I want to download something, I need to find a way to remotely control that machine.

So here’s exactly what I do:

1. Download TightVNC software.
2. Install TightVNC Server on my Acer and TightVNC Viewer on my Sony.
3. Set the TightVNC Server to run on startup as Windows Service ( Start->Programs->TightVNC->Administration->Install VNC Service) and then start the service manually from command line (since I don’t want to reboot the computer) using ‘net start winvnc’ command. Next I run the Service Helper manually (Start->Programs->TightVNC->Administration->Run Service Helper) to show up TightVNC tray icon.
   
4. The last thing I did on my Acer’s laptop was configuring the TightVNC Server setting (password, etc).
5. On my Sony’s laptop, I run TightVNC Viewer and enter the server’s IP address.
   
6. Done!

Pretty easy, isn’t it? Note that I’m using wireless router on my home, but I heard that TightVNC would work fine under LAN network as well.

The good thing about having a premium Rapidshare account is that you can download those shared files using download manager. I usually use Free Download Manager to handle the download, but couple days ago, I found a wonderful app called CryptLoad. CryptLoad is a free download manager for file sharing services. At the moment, it supports Rapidshare.com, Rapidshare.de, Megaupload.com, Uploaded.to, Netload.in, and Filer.net. Since I also own premium account for Megaupload, I can now ditch Megaupload’s MegaManager software and use Cryptload for handling download progress from Megaupload. Very nice.

Rejoice PSP and Playstation 3 owners, the new firmwares for your lovely gaming consoles are now available. The latest firmware for PSP, version 5.00, features support for Playstation Network that allows users to access the Playstation Store and download content directly to their PSP, a sleep timer function, full screen keyboard, and new XMB background design. As for the new PS3 v2.50 firmware, it comes with the ability to take a screenshot during a game (cool!), enhanced voice chat, and several power saving options, as well as a video scene search function (like on PSP) and SOCOM Bluetooth headset support.

TeamShift has successfully developed the world’s first custom firmware for Nintendo Wii which allow writable DVDs to be played. Not much detail about its features, but the same group has also recently announced a working PSP emulator for Wii (screenshot above). Unfortunately, it doesn’t have a decent frame rate right now (only 4-8 fps in average), but at least we can now safely expect to be able to play PSP games on our Wii.
