SEO Suggestions from Randy

A week ago I asked Randy Charles Morin of KBCafe to take a look at my site and give me some suggestions how to improve my search engine ranking. I know that my site is not yet well-indexed in any search engine. Here’s my original message to Randy:

I need suggestion especially on the SEO side. It sucks on Google Search Blog, Yahoo (no inbound links) and MSN (low pages indexed). I’m fairly new with SEO, so I guess I’d need lot of advices from you

Yesterday, he gave his valuable advices about my site. Here’s the summary:

To get more links on Google Search Blog, he advices me to be more active in blogosphere.

Your getting some linking action in the blogosohere. If you want to improve these numbers, then it’s simply a matter of being a better blogger. That doesn’t mean blog more. Often bloggers don’t realize that writing blog entries is only one part of being a blogger. Fully participate in the blogosphere by linking to a lot of other bloggers, linking to source blogs and leaving comments on other blogs (with your sig leading back to your blog).
For Yahoo!, he suggests to make a list of URL to each page on this site (like SiteMap), and then submit it to Yahoo!

Yahoo! has a great way for blogs to submit all their blog entries. You simply create a text file that list all the URLs, one URL per line. Here’s the URL list [http://www.kbcafe.com/adwords/urllist.aspx] I created to submit all the Besting Adwords blog entries to Yahoo! Then submit the URL here [http://submit.search.yahoo.com/free/request].

Well, I guess now I have some works to do :d

Search Engine Friendly Table Structure

Paul Madden, from Learn-From-The-Experts.Info, emailed me yesterday and told me about his new article, “Search Engine Friendly Table Structure“. The article talks about the search engine’s crawler behaviour, the effect to your site (and search engine’s ranking), and how you can make your site more search engine friendly by changing your website structure/layout. Overall, it’s a good SEO reading.

Search Engine Friendly Table Structure

Looking at your pages code the way the search engine spiders do.

Go and find the homepage of one of your websites, one that you worked hard on and got it looking exactly how you wanted. Great work! Now use your mouse and right click and view the page source, still happy? This is the view that you’re most important visitor gets, the search engine spider.

The spider only sees the code so look carefully again and look where that carefully crafted text on the page is. I bet is somewhere down the code and more often than not its even after all the navigation links to the rest of your site.

If you were the spider what would you think of the page now? Odds are if you were that spider you would be slightly confused about what was important on the page.

Now don’t be too disheartened this common problem is very easily solved for most site owners by implementing a quick fix, one that id like to share with you now. In these days of complete acceptance of CSS we could have created the site and positioned the code layout how we wanted but for many sites the traditional table based layout will have been used.

The traditional webpage table layout looks something like this: –

Cell1 â€“ Main Graphic Banner

Cell2 â€“ Navigation links
Cell3 â€“ Main Content

The problem comes because the search engine spider reads the code from the top of the page down and the way this table is coded means that the navigation links will come higher in the code than the main content. So to fix this the simple trick I use is to add an extra table cell at the top of the navigation section and to make the cell in the main section span two rows. This makes the table layout look like this: –

Cell2 â€“ Main Content
Cell3 â€“ Navigation Links

See the way the table cells are read now?

The spider skips past our new added cell and moves straight onto the main course of our vital content before finishing off with those navigation links.

That was easy eh?

This technique can even be implemented on existing websites without causing any disruption to the look and feel. You will have to take a little care if you have a complicated layout but if you have a traditional simple table based layout then you should be able to add this technique to your page without too many headaches.

Check Google PageRank Using GoogRank

Every webmaster whose taking serious on his/her site usually monitor its Google PageRank regularly. One of the handy tool for checking Google PageRank of specific website is GoogRank by NirSoft.

GoogRank is a stand-alone software, unlike the other PageRank checker which usually come as a plugin or browser’s toolbar. It takes user-submitted URL and then returns the corresponding PageRank for that URL. Very simple, but it does the job.

By the way, what is Google PageRank?

PageRank is a numeric value that represents how important a page is on the web. Google figures that when one page links to another page, it is effectively casting a vote for the other page. The more votes that are cast for a page, the more important the page must be. Also, the importance of the page that is casting the vote determines how important the vote itself is. Google calculates a page’s importance from the votes cast for it. How important each vote is is taken into account when a page’s PageRank is calculated.

Beware of Local Language Inbound Links

One of the recommended method to increase our search engine’s rank is by having as many inbound links as possible, especially from sites that have higher pagerank (for Google) than ours. But apparently, not all inbound links are good. Bad inbound links even resulted on the low search result on search engine.

This article, Warning: Mass Local Language Inbound Links Can Damage Your Health, covers it up. It explained that too many inbound links from local language website can mess up our rank in search engine’s result.

First, let’s see the background (quoted from the article):

We found this out accidentally. The background is as follows. Google chooses the language of the site through 4 main factors. The physical location of the webserver (IP number), the top level domain name – â€˜ .de’ for instance, the meta language tag(s), where the incoming links come from and also the actual language of the text.

Those are the four main factors that Google uses to identify the language of website. Now what happen if Google’s crawler found out that there are many inbound links to our site that come from local language website? Google may ‘regret’ our website original language and think that our website language is the same as the most local language website that have inbound links to our site!

Normally you’d think one of these factors could not override the rest. However, inbound links can override all other factors into duping Google that the page is of a different language than it actually is. This has disastrous consequences, for example if a German page focusing on German language readers gets a highly disproportionate amount of links from english language sites. Google ignores the fact the server is in Germany, the top level domain is â€˜.de’, the meta language tag is â€œde” and considers the site english – which results in dropping a lot in google.de but rising in Google.com.

Furthermore, that article give an example of the result of having too many local language inbound links:

If you come across an english language page with â€œtranslate this page” in the google reults and it fails to rank well then it will most likely mean you have too many links from foreign websites. This can happen through link purchase or through one of the many link networks for example.

How about your site? The simplest way to check it is by searching your site on both main Google search engine (Google.com) and Google local search engine. For example, I check this site (FunPonsel.Com) on Google.Com and Google.Co.Id (Indonesian, since I used to post using Indonesian language in the past and also having some inbound links from Indonesian-language website). First I’m using “funponsel” as the keyword. Both search engine returned 10,400 search result. Next, I try using “inurl:funponsel.com” as the keyword. Again, both returned the same result, 9750 search result.

Couple months ago, before I started posting in English, I remember correctly that search result for FunPonsel on Google.Com is not as good as on Google.Co.Id. So I guess I’m making the right decision to post completely in English language :p

I use the same keyword as the previous example, computer, and here’s the result.

Unlike Ontology Finder, this tool returned computer-related search keyword query, so the result is more specific than Ontology tool. By combining this two tools, we can build a perfect keyword list for our site.

My PageRank Mystery Solved

Finally, the mystery about why pagerank suddenly goes up from 4 rank to 5 rank is solved ) While trying this excelent SEO tool, named PageRank Prediction, I found out that the 4 rank on Google is for http://blog.funponsel.com/ and the 5 rank is for http://www.funponsel.com/blog :p

I started using subdomain name for my blog about 2 month ago, so that’s why the pagerank is differ than my original blog address. My other URL address, the free .TK domain, got lower rank on Google. Simply because I use it for only 1-2 weeks, on my first blogging experience

Case closed! :p
