Samsung Electronics will soon release the world’s first PCs embedded with a 32GB NAND flash-based SSD (Solit State Disk). Previously, NAND is mostly used on mobile computing application. It reads 300% faster (53MB/s) and writes 150% quicker (28MB/s) than normal hard drives. By replacing the hard drive with NAND SSD, multiple applications can be run more effectively, and large volume of data can be edited and reproduced more efficiently. For example, Microsoft Windows XP operating system will require up to 50% less time to boot up on SSD environment. Of course that’s a good thing. I’m sure I don’t have to explain how boring it is to wait for the Windows to finish booted up and get its system ready.

As I said before, Samsung is going to launch two PCs with NAND flash-based SSD. They are the Q1 ultra-mobile computer device and the Q30 laptop. Both planned to release in Korea on early June. I’ll talk the detail about each of those PCs on separate posts later.

With the usage of flash-based SSD, both Samsung’s new PCs could offer optimal portability. Standard 1.8-inch HDD used in many laptops or mobile PCs weighs around 50 grams, while the SSD weighs around 20 to 30 grams (depend on the package). They also much shock-resistant than the traditional mobile computer since the SSD is said to be able to withstand about twice of the impact that would damage a regular hard drive.

These include faster booting, greater durability, quieter operation, and increased battery life.“, said Kim Hounsoo, Executive Vice President of the Computing Division of Samsung Electronics, “The new Q30-SSD and Q1-SSD models are only the beginning. Samsung will continue to lead the market, introducing new portable PC models that bring these benefits to both consumers and enterprise users.”
