Samsung SPH-B2500 DMB PhoneSamsung recently presented their new satellite DMB phone, the SPH-B2500. One of the highlighted feature is the MP3 player. The player comes with a new audio codec that allows a compression 4 times higher than on a normal MP3, while still keep the same audio quality. The result, you can store 4 times more music on the phone.

If I take it correctly from the translation (heck, Google’s English translation from Korean language always weird and hard to understand), the new audio codec (probably named Tray) will try to convert the bit rate of the original MP3 files down to 32 kbps until it started to lose its original quality. Most of the MP3 files have 128 ~ 192 kbps bit rate. And since higher bit rate means larger file size, scaling down the bit rate will also reducing the size.

Digital Multimedia Broadcast (DMB) is an application of the Eureka 147 standard for the use of multimedia transmissions. This already includes the provision of web content and electronic programme guides in the UK and elsewhere. Using IP streaming over DAB, it is possible to stream compressed video according to any standardised method over DAB. [ source ]
