LG ElectronicsDirectTV Inc., the USA’s leading digital television service provider, today announced that they has selected LG Electronics as the first supplier of digital high-definition television (HDTV) set-top boxes based on powerful new video compression technology. LG itself has begun production of set-top boxes for use in DirectTV’s MPEG-4 (moving picture experts group) HD satellite broadcasts, further expanding LG’s leadership in the North American digital television market.

High-definition television (HDTV) means broadcast of television signals with a higher resolution than traditional formats (NTSC, SECAM, PAL) allow. Except for an early analog format in Japan, HDTV is broadcast digitally, and therefore its introduction sometimes coincides with the introduction of digital television (DTV). [ source ]

LG will sell their new HDTV set-top boxes under the DirectTV brand name. It’ll feature DirectTV’s advanced program guide, advanced security, and protected digital outputs (HDMI/HDCP) with simultaneous component/composite output, as well as a general-purpose LINUX-operating-system and USB port.

Built with Broadcom’s MPEG chipset and LG’s “VSB” chipset, viewers would be able to watch not only MPEG-4 HD satellite broadcasts, but also existing MPEG-2 standard- definition programming and terrestrial ATSC (Advanced Television System Committee) digital HDTV and SDTV broadcasts.
