Hybrid LocomotivesUnion Pacific Railroad recently announced 111 low-emissions, fuel-efficient and hybrid locomotives for yard operations in Houston/Galveston, Dallas/Ft. Worth, and San Antonio. This project aims to reduce diesel emissions in Texas over the next 10 years. Planned to introduce in 2006 and 2007, these locomotives are expected to reduce nitrogen oxide and PM emissions by up to 80% while using between 20% and 40% less fuel.

90% of the new locomotives will be RailPower road switchers, based on the technology the company developed for its hybrid Green Goat yard switchers. The RailPower Series is designed specially to reduce high fuel usage in road and branchline switching operations where locomotives can use up to three times the amount consumed by yard switchers.
