As reported by Sci-Tech Today, scientist are currently developing a mobile-phone-based diabetes management system which will greatly help both patients and general practioners to manage the condition. The system, named The Think Positive Diabetes System (or T+ diabetes), lets patients to input their blood glucose results to a center server by using their mobile phone and immeditealy receive and accurate graph which show how they are managing their diabetes.
The diabetes patients will be supplied with an electronic blood glucose monitor. The T+ diabetes software will also be loaded on to their mobile phone. When they input the blood glucose results, the monitor will transmits the result via bluetooth wireless link the mobile phone.
Next, the patient have to answer several relevant diary questions, such as recent food intake, and again, all the information is forwarded to a central computer. The data will be processed by the central computer and the graph is generated. This graph is sent back to the mobile phone.
From the diabetes graph, patient can see and monitor how they are doing. If the data falls outside their personal target, the patient is alerted and so is their health professional, who can then offer advice.
According to Dr. Jeremy Wheeler, who helped develop the system, “Patients monitor their blood sugars as they would normally, but the blood sugar meter communicates through their mobile phone to give them immediate graphical feedback,“.
