Super Mario Bros Tricks

Mario BrosRemember our old favorite game, Super Mario Bros? Well, looks like this guy really like that fat little character and spend his time to explore several Super Mario Bros games and searching for their tricks and glitch. About 40+ tricks currently available, like WallJump, Vine Teleporting, Going Through Bricks, Alternate Pipe, and many more.

Each trick has a detail explanation. For example, the WallJump trick.

Walljump is when you jump towards a wall and somehow Mario’s foot catches the wall and allows to jump again, boosting from the wall.

Theory: Walljump happens because the game does a floor check (a simple “is position divided by 16 even? Is there a solid block below him?” test) even during a wall-ejection. Wall-ejection is SMB’s mechanism to adjust Mario’s horizontal position properly when his left side and right side have a different inside-wall status. The game ejects Mario towards the opposite of his steering.

To perform a walljump, you need two things:

  • Some horizontal speed (towards the wall)
  • Mario’s feet must hit the wall exactly at a block boundary (every 16 pixels)

It’s possible to perform walljump from any non-lethal solid material (bricks, pipes, etc).

If Mario is big, he can sometimes just start walking immediately when he touches the wall, without need to jump. This happens if the block Mario’s feet are on is the top block of the wall.

Super Mario Bros games that covered on this trick list are:

  • NES Super Mario Bros
  • FDS Super Mario Bros 2 (also, SNES Lost Levels)
  • NES Super Mario Bros 2 (aka. Super Mario Bros USA)
  • NES Super Mario Bros 3
  • SNES Super Mario World
  • SNES Yoshi’s Island
