Hacking WebShots

Actually, it’s not really a hack :p
Also, the last time I try this is last week. If it’s no longer work, please let me know.

WebShots is an exellent desktop application where we can download many wonderful photos from their site and use it as our desktop wallpaper. WebShots offers 2 type of membership, free and premium. The bad news is, a free member can only download 5 photos a day. I know it sucks. With thousand high-quality beautiful photos (like this :p) and we can only get 5 of them per day :(

If you can afford a cheap $2.49/month subscription, go get the premium membership. It’s worth it (many features), and the WebShots team really deserve it!

Now, actually, you can get more than 5 photos if you want, without become a Premium Membership. The WebShots web developer team is probably forget to use session, and they use cookie instead. Not really a problem. But if they stored the number of photos we’ve downloaded in certain day using cookie, that could be a problem (for them). I think you already get the point here.

In short, downloaded photo history is stored in cookie. What happen if the cookie is gone? You’re right. They’ll think that you haven’t download any photos yet, so you can download some more. :))

So the hacking attempt is simple. Download until you reach your limit, clean your domain cookie (not usual cookie), and download again. Repeat it until you tired :d

Here’s how you do it using FireFox browser:

  1. Download as many photos as you want until a download limit message appear.
  2. From your Web Developer Toolbar (if it’s not there, activate it from View - Toolbar - Web Developer Toolbar), click on Miscellaneous - Delete Domain Cookies.
  3. Reload the page and you’ll be asked to login again, so do it.
  4. Now you can download again.

Hope it helps. And for WebShots team, you have to fix it. Keep per user download history on your database, and you’ll be saved :))
